Thinking of booking a holiday in Lanzarote this year? Plenty of other tourists did just that during the course of 2009, with the island welcoming just under 1.4 million tourists last year. An impressive figure given the impact of the credit crunch and the weakness of the pound.

Despite these factors around 750,000 tourists from the UK are expected to visit the island during the course of 2010. Around half of them will book self catering accommodation – such as villas in Lanzarote – direct online. With many booking specific dates to coincide with one of the many fiestas and festivals that take place on the island every year.

For holiday makers the islands many Lanzarote villas available throughout the year.

In February Carnival sweeps across the island – bringing work to a halt for at least a couple of weeks. With events taking place in different locations and on different dates. This is arguably the most colourful and best attended event of the year and attracts huge crowds. Featuring cleverly decorated floats that wouldn’t look out of place at the Notting Hill Carnival, massed ranks of drum bands and hordes of dancers dressed in real Carmen Miranda fashion. With plenty of riotous dancing and drinking.

May sees the arrival of the annual Iron Man event on the island. This triathlon is widely regarded as one of the toughest competitions of its kind in the world. And little wonder as entrants have to complete a course that includes a 3km swim, 180km bike ride and a full marathon. Phew! It’s no surprise then that so many competitors never even see the finishing line. With around 10% of all entrants dropping out before completing the course.

Many music lovers plan their visit around the Jazz Canarias festival in July. Which in previous years has featured some of the leading emerging talents of this genre. Such as the prodigious young jazz bassist Esperanza Spalding and the guitarist Kyle Eastwood –offspring of the famous actor Clint Eastwood.

Bookings for holiday apartments in Lanzarote rise again during September.
When the annual Costa Musica Festival takes place on the beach at Playa Bastian in the resort of Costa Teguise. Featuring an eclectic mix of live dance acts and DJ´s from across Europe.

If you are thinking of where to holiday this year we recommend you reflect on travelling to Spain, where the climate is magnificent and you may perhaps still stumble on a bottle of acceptable wine for simply 1 Euro!

The island of Lanzarote in the Canarian archipelago at first glance may not seem to have the best of green credentials. But there are a number of ways in which it beats other destinations hands down for holidaymakers looking to reduce their carbon footprint.

To begin with, its location only four hours flight from the United Kingdom means that it is half the distance and therefore half the fuel consumption, of the Caribbean. And it can vie with tropical islands for all year round good weather, with an average of only twenty days rainfall per annum and day time temperatures of approximately 20º Celsius even in mid winter.

Even the Lanzarote holiday apartments make a contribution to minimising the eco footprint of the island.

The year round sunshine that it enjoys means that solar panels are used widely across the resorts and in residential homes. Many holiday villas in Lanzarote have their swimming pools heated by panels on the roof, whilst some even derive their internal power from this source as well.

Wind turbines have been in use on Lanzarote since the mid 1990’s and contribute approximately thirty percent of the island’s power needs. These giant turbines make good use of the prevailing winds as they blow in from the Atlantic Ocean. And local residents often choose smaller turbines for domestic use for the same reason.

But it isn’t simply businesses and accommodation on Lanzarote that operate on a more eco-friendly basis. Even the tourist attractions have been developed to work as much in harmony with their surroundings as possible. This low impact ethos was the result of Cesar Manrique creative influence in the island’s development which came just at the right moment.

These factors combined have turned Lanzarote into an ideal holiday destination for the environmentally conscientious. There are even several places to stay that run entirely on solar and wind energy, as these alternative sources of power have gained in popularity and effectiveness in recent years. Making eco holidays in Lanzarote a reality.

More detailed information about available Lanzarote holidays can be found on the Lanzarote1.com website.

There are many good reasons for booking a holiday in Lanzarote during 2010.As the most easterly of the Canary Islands is home to over 90 great beaches and enjoys great weather all year round. Whilst also hosting some fantastic fiestas and festivals throughout the course of the year.

Anyone planning to visit the island during 2010 will find a wealth of different accommodation options. With good quality Lanzarote villas and hotels available in all of the main three resorts, as well as across the countryside.

Car hire in Lanzarote is very inexpensive too, making it so simple to drive around and see some of the festivals that are taking place throughout this period.

The year kicks off in style with the Canarian Music Festival. A prestigious event that is staged across the entire island in the archipelago, offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy some of the best classical music sounds around. With Lanzarote playing host to performers such as The Prague National Chamber Theatre Orchestra.

Carnaval kicks off across the island in February. And whilst the celebrations are not quite as riotous as in Rio they still attract thousands of revellers. With many holidaymakers planning their holidays in Lanzarote around this colourful event, which pretty much brings work across the island to halt for a couple of weeks every year.

Whilst not quite in the same league as Rio the most riotous Carnaval processions and celebrations can be found in the island capital of Arrecife and the largest resort of Puerto del Carmen. Featuring imaginatively decorated floats, marching drum bands and plenty of late night partying.

May sees the arrival of the annual Iron Man competition. Which is widely regarded as one of the toughest triathlons in the world. Over a thousand super fit competitors will be battling it out for a top prize of €75,000 and a slot in the grand final in Hawaii. Taking on a course that encompasses a 180km bike ride, 2km swim and a full marathon. Which is staged along the Avenida del las Playas – the main beachfront thoroughfare in Puerto del Carmen.

June is one of the most important months in the Catholic calendar as this is when the fiesta of Corpus Christ takes place every year – on the eighth Thursday (or 60 days) after Easter. Uniquely on Lanzarote it is celebrated with the design and creation of huge multi coloured carpets of salt. Which depict key scenes from the Bible. The best of which can be viewed in the historic town of Teguise or the island capital of Arrecife.

You can find details of self catering villas in Lanzarote and further Lanzarote villas on the Lanzarote guide book website.

The Canaries are a chain of seven Spanish owned islands situated just off the coast of West Africa. A location that makes them very popular with tourists as they enjoy warm weather, loads of sunshine and very little rainfall all year round. These favourable climatic conditions have earned the Canaries the position of one of the most visited destinations in Spain. With Lanzarote – the most easterly of the islands – welcoming well over 1.5 million foreign arrivals on their holidays in Lanzarote during the course of last year alone.

So lets check out a little more about the island and island life to see why holidays in Lanzarote remain so popular and choosing to stay in one of the Lanzarote holiday villas that the island has to offer is becoming an increasingly popular holiday accommodation accommodation choice amongst holiday makers.

Like all of the Canaries Lanzarote boasts a unique charm and character. Visitors expecting a lush green island will be disappointed though. As it is much more barren than the rest of the Canaries. As a result of experiencing very little rainfall. Whilst also boasting an arid terrain forged by volcanic eruptions centuries ago.

Today this region of the island occupies about a quarter of Lanzarote´s total land mass. And is a hugely popular visitor attraction, known locally as The Fire Mountains or Timanfaya. Where visitors can view a lunar like landscape that has served as a backdrop for a number of science fiction films and most recently the latest release from Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, Broken Embraces. Which stars Penelope Cruz and which was shot on location around the island.

There are plenty of places to stay on the island. With visitors able to choose from a large selection of Lanzarote villas, hotels and apartments. The bulk of which are located in the main resorts of Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise. Whilst rural tourism has also started to grow in popularity over the last few years.

As well as the volcanic region Lanzarote is a real beach lover’s paradise, home to about 90 fine stretches of sand. The best of which can be found outside the main resorts in locations such as Famara and Arrieta. Both of which are still unspoiled coastal villages.

Many tourists visiting Lanzarote for the first time are surprised to encounter so much in the way of things to do and see. As the island boasts an abundance of cultural attractions – with no less than twelve fascinating museums. Such as the Museum of International and Contemporary Art in Arrecife. Along with plenty of picturesque towns and villages, such as Haria and Teguise, the first settlement ever established by the Spanish in the Canaries in the early 1400´s.

Lanzarote in the Canary Islands is home to three main holiday resorts. Along with the Millionaire’s Marina of Puerto Calero. Which boasts two upmarket hotels and a host of expensive yachts and craft as well as plenty of good quality restaurants.

Each resort has its own history, character, attractions and plus points. With all of them offering high standards of accommodation and boasting an excellent selection of Lanzarote villas and hotels.

So where can you find a selection of resorts renowned for a wide selection of Lanzarote apartments.

Puerto del Carmen

Before the arrival of tourism Puerto del Carmen was known to locals as La Tiñosa. A sleepy little fishing village on Lanzarote´s south east coastline.Package holidays changed all that though and now the resort extends for some 8km away from its original hub in the Old Town harbour area.Today, it is Lanzarote´s most popular destination by some distance – offering good value apartment accommodation. As well as a number of four star hotels and high quality villas.

Puerto del Carmen is an ideal location for all types of holiday makers. As the resort is perfect for families with young children. Thanks to the fine quality of the resort’s blue flag beaches. Whilst also offering lots of child friendly attractions such as the Rancho Texas Theme Park – which offers kids an abundance of Wild West themed fun and games.

Villas In Costa Teguise

Situated just fifteen minutes north of Lanzarote´s international airport at Arrecife Costa Teguise was initially designed as the island’s upmarket resort. And during the 1980´s it proved very successful at attracting moneyed visitors from countries such as Germany, Sweden and Denmark.

However its sheen has faded a little since then. Partly due to the development of Playa Blanca in the south of the island. Which has snatched the slot of number 2 destination away over recent years. However Costa Teguise remains an attractive holiday hot spot – boasting wide avenues and a spacious open plan feel. Whilst the resort is also home to some great beaches, such as the main stretch of sand at Playa Cucharas.

Playa Blanca

Last but not least Playa Blanca was developed during the 1990´s and offers a winning combination of great weather and fantastic beaches. Allied with an excellent selection of hotels and holiday villas.

There are three main beaches within the resort itself in the form of Playa Dorada, Playa Flamingo and Playa Blanca. Whilst the famously picturesque coves and bays of Papagayo are around a fifteen minute walk away from the town centre.
